Description
The James Nicholson Memorial is a memorial monument located in the General Cemetery, dating from around 1872. It is made of ashlar sandstone and is set within an elongated triangular enclosure. The memorial features an elevated chest tomb topped with a statue of a woman kneeling in prayer. The tall stepped ashlar base has a chamfered plinth and a tomb above, which once had statues at each corner that have now been removed. These were beneath bell-shaped canopies that are part of a moulded cornice, with the statue positioned above. The tomb is located at the north end of the enclosure, which is formed by a stepped ashlar plinth topped with cast-iron panels featuring linked pierced circles and moulded posts.
This monument commemorates members of the Nicholson family, including Harriet Nicholson, who died in 1876, her husband who commissioned the monument and died in 1909, and their children. The Nicholson family were significant industrialists in Sheffield during the late 19th century. The memorial is situated near that of another prominent industrialist of the time, Mark Firth, creating a notable group of memorials.
