Description
The New Chapel at General Cemetery in Sheffield is a cemetery chapel built in 1848 by William Flockton. It is designed in the Gothic Revival style and constructed from coursed squared stone with ashlar dressings and a fish scale slate roof. The chapel features a plinth, buttresses, a coped parapet, and a gable. The main body consists of a single compartment with four bays and includes a large west tower topped with a spire.
On the east side, there is a prominent four-light pointed arched window adorned with flamboyant tracery and a hoodmould with angel stops. Each side of the main body has four traceried two-light pointed arched windows, although these windows are bricked up. The tower is divided into three stages and is characterized by crocketed gabled angle buttresses, three set-offs, string courses, and a corbel table.
The first stage of the tower features heavily moulded archways on the north and south sides, each with a hoodmould and responds. Beneath the archway, there is a moulded doorway with a hoodmould and filleted shafts, along with a two-light pointed arched window to the west. The second stage has a single lancet window on three sides, each with chamfered flat-headed surrounds. The bell stage includes a moulded opening on each side with a traceried two-light pointed arched bell-opening. The octagonal broach spire is topped with three tiers of lucarnes on alternate faces, each with crocketed gables. The interior was not inspected, and the building was vacant and disused at the time of the survey.
