Description

The garden alcove, steps, and adjoining potting shed were built in 1905 by Edwin Lutyens for AJ Hobson. They are constructed from coursed squared stone with brick dressings and are set against an earth bank and retaining wall. The half-dome alcove on the left features brick bands and a rock-faced keystone, with a semicircular stone bench around the wall inside. Above the alcove is a flagged landing, flanked by flagged steps leading to smaller landings. The potting shed on the right has a segment-arched roof made of concrete slabs laid lengthwise, with a shallow parapet. It includes four oval windows and a round-headed door on the right return. Inside, there is a cross wall with a round-arched opening and a segment-arched roof. AJ Hobson was the Master Cutler around 1897, and the nearby No. 381 Fulwood Road, known as Esholt House, was built during that period.
