Description
Gardener's cottage with attached walls and pavilions, built in 1913 with alterations in the mid- and late-20th century. Designed by Edwin Lutyens for Mrs. Edgar, the cottage is constructed of red brick in stretcher bond and features a swept hipped roof made of plain clay tiles. It has a central brick chimney with plinth and pilaster buttresses at the corners. The building is rectangular in shape, one storey high, and consists of five bays with stepped tiles at the eaves, knob finials on the gutter brackets, and 2-light windows with pegged wooden frames, leaded lights, and metal casements.
The entrance elevation includes a stone step leading up to a central part-glazed door with glazing bars, flanked by two windows. The rear has a repositioned 2-panel door and some window alterations. Inside, there are 2-panel doors with brass knobs, decorative window catches, parquet floors with tiles in the former kitchen, and moulded fireplaces with decorative metal grates and tiled surrounds and hearths.
The attached walls are made of red brick in stretcher bond, with alternate courses featuring one header for every three stretchers. They have a stepped tile verge below a triangular-section coping of plain clay tiles, with some bricked-up former entrances and added sections. The pavilions at the north-east and south-west corners each have a pyramidal roof. The north-east pavilion is triangular in shape, facing the cottage's back yard, and has a stone step leading up to a board door flanked by 1-light windows, with a WC inside. The south-west pavilion has undergone significant alterations in the mid-20th century. This is a good-quality Lutyens cottage along with its associated garden buildings.
