Description

The former Barclays Bank, built between 1911 and 1912 by Edgington and Spink, is a bank located on Packhorse Road in Gerrards Cross. The building is constructed of English bond brick with stone dressings and features a slate mansard roof, along with brick ridge stacks that have moulded stone cornices. It has a double-depth plan and is designed in a Wrenaissance style. The structure stands two storeys high with an attic and has a symmetrical three-window range.

A finely-carved pedimented stone doorway is a prominent feature, with a flaming urn set in the tympanum of a swan-necked open pediment above fluted Corinthian pilasters that frame panelled double doors. The ground floor has 12-pane sash windows set in gauged red brick square-headed architraves, which are adorned with finely-carved keystones, while the first floor features cut brick aprons. The building also has rusticated quoin strips, a dentilled wood cornice, and pedimented dormers.

The side elevations mirror the front, with a three-bay design, and the rear bay to the right showcases a fine brick swag over a round window above a sash window framed by rusticated pilasters and quoin strips. There is a two-storey extension from the 1930s and a one-storey extension from 1958, both in a similar style to the rear of the main building.

Inside, the banking hall features a panelled dado with a dentilled cornice and arched doorways leading to the stair hall at the rear, although this area has not been inspected.
