Description

The sundial, dated 'R.W. 1739', is located at the center of a rose garden approximately 90 meters northeast of Clifton House. It is made of ashlar sandstone and features a chamfered square plinth inscribed with 'Sam.I- Walker / Fecit'. The shaft is octagonal at the base and becomes cylindrical, topped with a moulded capital supporting a cuboidal sundial. Iron gnomons are positioned on the principal faces, displaying the inscriptions 'Dum spectas fugio' and 'Sic transit gloria mundi', along with the date. The side faces have flat, projecting blades. The sundial is set on a two-stage plinth that supports a ball finial.

Samuel Walker, a prominent iron founder from Rotherham, originally placed the sundial at Mr. Habershon's house at The Holmes. It was later moved to Ferham House before being relocated to its current position at Clifton House. The sundial is illustrated in its original form by John Guest in his 1879 publication, "Historic Notices of Rotherham".
