Description
Nos 59 and 61 on Moorgate Road are a pair of mid-18th century houses that have been converted into two shops and one dwelling. The buildings are constructed of deeply-coursed, dressed sandstone, which is now painted, and feature a Welsh slate roof. They stand two storeys tall with a half basement and attic, presenting three openings on the first floor. The large projecting quoins add to their architectural character.
At the center, there are two doorways with broad, projecting, square-faced surrounds, each fitted with part-glazed doors. On either side of these doors are old shop windows, each framed by wooden pilasters, a plain frieze, and a cornice that matches the one above the doors. The first floor has two-pane sash windows in projecting square-faced surrounds, flanking a matching blind opening above the doors. The buildings also feature shaped kneelers and square-cut gable copings, with brick stacks at the ends.
The rear of the buildings retains original square-faced surrounds for the door and window openings, along with paired stair windows and two wooden dormers. An old photograph indicates that the right shop existed around 1915, while the left house was converted later. This information is referenced in R. G. Neville and J. Benson's book, "Rotherham As It Was," published in 1976.
