Description

Malpas Hill Gateway is an estate entrance gateway built around 1760 by James Paine for the Earl of Scarbrough. It is constructed from ashlar magnesian limestone and features wrought-iron gates. The gateway has a triumphal-arched carriage entrance that is flanked by side gates and end piers, with quadrant wing walls that include intermediate and end piers.

The gateway's design includes a plinth and band-rusticated piers. The central arch has a fluted impost band, an archivolt, and a coffered soffit, with festooned paterae in the spandrels beneath a dentilled pediment. The impost band continues as a cornice above recessed panels with side gates, each featuring its own plain impost and archivolt. These side gates connect to end piers that have frieze blocks with sunken panels, paterae, and cornices topped with flattened-dome copings.

The central gates are double and feature square bars, three low rails with scrolls, and two upper rails, with the lower rail adorned with scrolls and finials, while the upper rail has cresting of spiral twists and anthemion devices. The single side gates are designed in the same style but lack the uppermost rail. The quadrant walls each have three rusticated intermediate piers linked by a band beneath the copings, and the square, rusticated end piers have fluted cornices and flattened-dome copings, although the right end pier was collapsing at the time of the last survey.
