Description

The Oldcotes War Memorial, designed by A.H. Borrowdale, was unveiled in 1920. Made of grey granite, it features a broken column topped with a sheathed sword and a wreath carved in relief on its lower section. The memorial is set on a tapering, rusticated plinth, which has an inscription on the front that reads: "GREAT WAR 1914-1919/ THIS COLUMN WAS ERECTED BY/ THE PEOPLE OF OLDCOTES/ IN MEMORY OF THE FALLEN" followed by four names and the phrase "GREATER LOVE HATH NO MAN THAN THIS." The plinth is supported by a three-stage stepped base. Centrally located on the second step is a stone flower holder dedicated to the memory of an RAF sergeant who died in 1954.
