Description
Langold Farmhouse is a mid-18th century farmhouse, likely built by Ralph Knight for his own estate. The structure features thinly-coursed, squared limestone and a Westmorland slate roof. It is two storeys high with a basement and attic, and has side wings without an attic, arranged in a 1:1:1 x 2 bay configuration. A ground-floor sill band runs along the front. The central bay projects forward and contains a plain Venetian window with an entablature for the side lights and a keystone above its round arch. The windows have been renewed but retain glazing bars.
On the first floor, there is a Diocletian window with a central sash that has glazing bars and a lower sill, along with a keyed oeil-de-boeuf featuring radial glazing bars in the tympanum of the pediment. Each outer bay has a tall round-headed window with glazing bars, set in an ashlar surround with a moulded impost and keystone beneath a half pediment. The central bay has lateral stacks with bands.
At the rear, there is a 20th-century door with a fanlight and flanking windows in a Serliana style, topped by a round arch. Above this, there is a 20th-century casement in an ashlar surround, while the outer bays mirror the front. A 20th-century addition on the left side is not of special interest. Ralph Knight was known for his architectural designs, and although plans for his own house were drawn up, they were not executed due to his death in 1768.
