Description

MALTBY BLYTH ROAD SK58NW (south-west side, off), Roche Abbey 7/41 Cowhouse approximately 40 metres to south-west of Abbey Farmhouse II Cowhouse with hayloft and dovecote. c1800. Coursed rubble limestone, pantile roof. 2 storeys, 2:1:2 bays. Central bay breaks forward and has wide, rusticated round-arched entrance. Outermost bays have doors with overlights in rock-faced surrounds; similar surrounds to slated casements of bays 2 and 4. Rock-faced sill band links lst-floor openings having slatted casements in rock-faced surrounds, some windows blocked. Central bay has pediment with oculus in tympanum. Interior: central arch leads to cowhouse doorways on left and right and to stone steps to lst-floor haylofts. Pattern-book king-post trusses on heavy- scantling tie beams. Partition walls flank the central bay and the attic behind pediment forms a dovecote lined by wood and plaster nesting holes.
