Description
This building is a barn and cowhouse dating from the mid to late 18th century, with some minor later alterations. It is constructed of uncoursed limestone rubble and has stone slate roofs, although the lower range (the cowhouse) was originally thatched. The barn features a gabled cart entrance with full-height double doors made of planks, set beneath a wooden lintel. There are nine tiers of pigeon nesting holes and ledges on the red brick gable, and there is an opposing entrance at the rear.
To the right of the cart entrance, there is a lower gabled range that has a plank door with a small window to the left on the ground floor, as well as another plank door above it. A casement window is located at the far right of the main range, and there are square air vents present. The cowhouse, which is attached and slightly projects to the right, has a plank door at the front and infilled openings on the gable end.
Inside, the main range has a double-purlin collar and tie beam roof supported by four bays, while the lower range features a double-purlin roof in three bays, with principal rafters rising from the tops of the walls and slightly cambered tie beams below the lower sets of purlins. There are also inserted lofts in the outer bays.
