Description

KELMSCOTT SU2499-25999, SU29NE 10/82, 5/82 Stonne-slab fence enclosing and dividing gardens of Nos.1 and 4 Manor Cottages continuing to SE along road to Garden Cot. GV II

Stone-slab fence. Probably early C20. Vertical limestone slabs set close together; tied together with iron clamps and backed by wooden rail to section around Nos.1 and 4, Manor Cottages (q.v.) backed by iron railings to remainder. Encloses and divides gardens of Nos.1 and 4 Manor Cottages and separates garden of No.4 from field to east. Continues to south-east along road to Garden Cottage (q.v.) , part of whose garden it separates from field to north. A short section of similar fence (not included in this list) in front of Ernest Gimson's Village Hall (q.v.) and its presence around Nos.1 and 4, Manor Cottages, also designed by Gimson, suggest that it may have been installed at his direction. No other such fences are found in the immediate vicinity. Forms an important part of the village scene. Included for group value. [2377]
