Description
The stone-slab fence is likely from the early 20th century and encloses and divides the gardens of numbers 1 and 4 Manor Cottages in Kelmscott. It consists of vertical limestone slabs set closely together, secured with iron clamps, and backed by a wooden rail around the gardens of numbers 1 and 4. The remainder of the fence is backed by iron railings. The fence not only separates the gardens of these cottages but also divides the garden of number 4 from the field to the east. It continues southeast along the road to Garden Cottage, where it separates part of the garden from the field to the north. A short section of a similar fence, which is not included in this listing, is located in front of Ernest Gimson's Village Hall, suggesting that the fence may have been installed under his direction, as he also designed the cottages. This type of fence is unique in the immediate area and contributes significantly to the village's character. It is included for its group value.
