Description

Job's Close is a cottage located in Kelmscott, dating from the late 17th century, with extensions made in the early 18th century and the 20th century. The building is constructed of roughly coursed limestone rubble and features a stone slate roof. Originally designed with a two-cell plan, the cottage was extended to the right, with a visible straight joint at the rear from the 18th-century addition, and further extended again to the right in the 20th century.

The cottage is one storey with an attic and has three-light chamfered stone mullion windows on either side of a roughly central boarded door, which is topped with a moulded wood lintel and a gabled hood, characteristic of the 17th-century section. Above the windows, there are gabled eaves dormers from the late 19th or early 20th century. The 18th-century addition features an infilled doorway with a wood lintel immediately to the right of the junction with the 17th-century part, alongside a three-light mullion window and a corresponding gabled eaves dormer above. The 20th-century addition has a boarded door.

There is an integral end stack with a dripstone to the left and a ridge stack, which was formerly an end stack, located at the junction between the 18th and 20th-century sections. The interior was not inspected during the last survey in May 1987, but it was noted to have chamfered spine beams in the ground-floor rooms, which have been combined into one space. The left room features an inglenook fireplace with a bread oven to the right, and there is a boarded door that likely leads, or once led, to a winder staircase.
