Description

Field Cottage is an early 17th-century cottage, originally two dwellings, with alterations from the 19th and 20th centuries, and a late 20th-century extension to the rear and raising of the roof. It is constructed of limestone rubble, with a 20th-century cement tile roof and an old brick central chimney stack. The cottage follows a two-unit plan and has two storeys and an attic, with a two-window front. A doorway has been blocked on the left-hand side. The windows are 19th-century three-light casements with glazing bars, set beneath painted wood lintels. Two mid-20th century roof dormers each have a two-light casement with glazing bars. Return sides feature plank doors.

Inside, the room to the left contains a stone open fireplace with a roughly carved bressumer and rough ceiling beams. The room to the right has a large open fireplace with a chamfered stone surround. An old bressumer, brought in from elsewhere, sits below a fragment of the original. A deep splayed interior, lined with stone and old bricks, incorporates a bread oven. A broad-chamfered ceiling beam features stop-chamfered spine beams with run-out stops.
