Description
The cascade at the north-east corner of Laughton Pond is a Grade II listed feature, likely designed around 1775 by the renowned landscape architect Lancelot 'Capability' Brown for Lord Scarbrough. Constructed from irregular magnesian limestone, the blocks are arranged in deeply-coursed tiers, reaching approximately 3 metres in height. This allows the waters of Laughton Pond to flow down, creating a picturesque landscape feature within the grounds of Roche Abbey, which is a Scheduled Ancient Monument. Brown's work at Roche Abbey took place between 1774 and 1777, and his contract for the project is preserved at Sandbeck Park.
