Description

The Maltby War Memorial is a First World War memorial, erected in 1924 by Messrs Tyas and Guest, with additions for the Second World War. It is made of granite and concrete, featuring lead lettering and secondary bronze plaques, and is set on a rectangular flagstone base.

Located on a bluff above Maltby Crags, the memorial is designed as a square granite monument with circular engaged columns at each corner. These columns support a pedimented cornice, topped by a finial that resembles a squat chimney-like column capped with a crown. The memorial is positioned on a three-stepped base, where the upper surfaces of the top pair of steps are chamfered, while the lower step is plain concrete.

The original inscriptions on the memorial are set in lead lettering. The north-east pediment is inscribed with the years 1914 – 1918, and the panel below honors the men of Maltby who fell in the Great War, listing 30 names. An inscription on the top step reads “LEST WE FORGET.” An additional 71 names of First World War fallen soldiers are inscribed on the north-west and south-east panels. The names of those who fell in the Second World War are recorded on bronze plaques attached to three faces of the second step. The plaque on the north-east face notes the years 1939 – 45 and includes the phrase “AT THE GOING DOWN OF THE SUN AND IN THE MORNING WE WILL REMEMBER THEM,” along with 20 names. The plaques on the north-west and south-east faces each display 28 names, with one additional name added centrally beneath the plaque on the south-east side. The memorial is set on a square paved podium that is slightly sunken and surrounded by kerb stones, within a larger irregular hexagonal paved area.
