Description
MALTBY CHURCH LANE SK59SW (south end) 3/43 Medieval tomb set in lych gate to Church of Saint Bartholomew GV II Altar tomb. C14, resited c1863. Magnesian limestone inlaid with brass. Rectangular with hollow plinth moulding, inscribed side panels and moulded lid inlaid with brass cross having an ogee-arch beneath a stepped Calvary base. Inscribed panel on east side reads 'mors janua vitae' (death, the gateway to life). Unique of its kind in South Yorkshire. Its present location has allowed vandalism including removal of part of the brass cross. P. F.
