Description
The medieval tomb set in the lych gate to the Church of Saint Bartholomew is an altar tomb dating from the 14th century, which was relocated around 1863. It is made of magnesian limestone and features inlaid brass. The tomb is rectangular and has a hollow plinth moulding, inscribed side panels, and a moulded lid that includes a brass cross above an ogee-arch with a stepped Calvary base. An inscribed panel on the east side reads "mors janua vitae," which translates to "death, the gateway to life." This tomb is unique in South Yorkshire. Unfortunately, its current location has made it susceptible to vandalism, including the removal of part of the brass cross.
