Description
The Old Hall Farmhouse and Hall Farmhouse are a pair of farmhouses, now two separate dwellings, located in Braithwell. The earliest part dates to 1683, with a later addition constructed in 1771. The buildings are constructed from coursed and rubble magnesian limestone with Welsh slate roofs.
The Old Hall Farmhouse, dated 1771, is a three-storey, three-bay dwelling. It features quoins, a central doorway with a six-pane overlight set within a quoined surround and a keystone below a plaque inscribed 'B/JEG/1771'. Flanking bays at ground floor have projecting sills to six-pane sash windows with glazing bars, each beneath a flat arch. The second floor has three six-pane casements. The roof is hipped with two brick ridge stacks positioned to either side of the central bay. Inside, the contemporary staircase has turned balusters.
Hall Farmhouse, a two-storey, two-cell building, forms a wing to the rear of the left side. It has a large quoins on the left side, and a chamfered plinth that steps down at the doorway on the right side of the centre. This doorway has quoins, a lintel with a keystone and a continuous dripmould which extends down over three-light, double-chamfered windows now without mullions. A 20th-century casement window is located on the left side. Above the doorway is a rectangular plaque inscribed 'T B E/1683', set below a double-chamfered, single-light window with a dripstone, flanked by three-light mullioned windows. A large rendered ridge stack is present. The rear of Hall Farmhouse has an intact three-light, double-chamfered, mullioned window on the ground floor to the right. Alterations have been made to a doorway with a dripstone. A blocked single-light window with a dripstone is located on the first floor, flanked to the left by a two-light mullioned window and to the right by a similar window lacking its mullion. On the left return, a truncated base of a large external stack is visible. Hall Farmhouse’s interior includes a large basket-arched fireplace with moulded voussoirs. 20th-century additions to the rear are not considered to be of particular interest.
