Description
The Bear Pit, located approximately 40 metres to the west-north-west of Camellia House, is a garden feature dating from the 18th century, which incorporates a doorway from around 1630. It was created for the Wentworth Estate. The 1630 doorway is made of limestone, while the upper entrance features ashlar sandstone, and the interior consists of rubble sandstone with a brick vault. The structure is set beneath an overgrown earth mound and has a grotto-style entrance leading to a curved tunnel that connects to a vaulted chamber. Internal steps rise to a landing and the upper entrance.
The 1630 doorway is designed in Jacobean style, showcasing elaborate carvings on the piers, frieze, and scrolled pediment, topped with a cartouche finial. The upper doorway has a shouldered lintel and includes a cast-iron plaque.
Inside, there is a subterranean circular room with a rebated ashlar surround at the round-arched tunnel doorway, and small flanking doorways lead to two vaulted cells. Stone steps with an iron rail lead up to the domical roof. A plaque above the upper doorway reads:
"There is a healing in the garden When one longs for peace and pardon Once past the gate no need to wait For God is in the garden."
