Description
The Bear Pit, located near the south side of the Botanical Gardens in Sheffield, is an early 19th-century structure that was restored in the mid-20th century. It is constructed from coursed rubble with stone dressings and features renewed iron railings. The circular pit measures approximately 5 meters in diameter and 4 meters deep, surrounded by a low parapet wall with slab coping. The entrance consists of a triple arched passage, with a larger central opening that includes slots for bars or doors. Inside the pit, there are two blocked segment-headed openings on opposite sides. This bear pit is one of the original features of the Botanical Gardens.
