Description
64 New Road is a Grade II listed building, originally two cottages that were combined into one. It dates back to 1876 and was built for the St. Leger estate of Park Hill. The structure is made of snecked, dressed limestone and features an interlocking pantile roof. It has an L-shaped plan in the Cottage Orne style, with later additions at the rear.
The front of the building is one storey with attics and has a symmetrical design with two bays and a gabled bay on the right that projects forward. The corners are accentuated with quoins. The windows are chamfered mullioned types, with casements that include lozenge-shaped panels and diagonal glazing bars in the corners. The doorway, located between the first and second bays, features a panelled door set in a double-chamfered surround, topped by a bracketed canopy with a catslide roof. To the left of the doorway is a three-light window, and to the right is a two-light window. There are also two-light roof dormers with timbered gables.
The gabled bay on the right has single-light windows on either side of a recessed date plaque bearing the St. Leger initials, along with a three-light attic window beneath the timbered upper gable. The roof has a half-hipped left end with a stack that has an ashlar band and coping, connected by strips, and a matching ridge stack at the junction with the third bay.
The right side of the building mirrors the front, with three bays. The second bay has a two-light window that replaced a doorway, located under a canopy. There is a gabled full-dormer on the right, along with a matching end stack. The style of this building is similar to that of No 79 situated opposite.
