Description
This barn, located approximately 20 metres to the south-west of Manor Farmhouse in Thorpe in Balne, dates from the early to mid-18th century and has been altered over time. It features a rubble stone plinth with red brick constructed in English garden wall bond and a pantile roof. The barn is two storeys high and consists of five to six bays.
On the east side, which is partly within a later shed, there is one double boarded door and two additional doorways to the left. A first-floor door is positioned to the right of centre, with a hatch to its right, and triangular vents are present. The steeply-pitched roof has cogged eaves and raised verges.
The west side includes a near-central horizontally-sliding door and a large tractor entrance inserted on the right, which features a 19th-century iron casement and a first-floor doorway beyond. There are also triangular vents and three first-floor hatches. The right return displays the initials 'TS' on iron tie plates.
Inside, the barn has a hybrid roof that includes some old tie beams and later queen-post trusses, with old rafters pegged at the ridge. Other attached farm buildings are not considered to be of special interest.
