Description

The Leylands is a house located on Hatfield Manor Road, built in the mid-19th century. It features a cement-rendered exterior and a Welsh slate roof, with two storeys and three bays. The building has a plinth and stone steps leading to a central single-storey porch, which includes corner pilasters, an archivolt with a lion's-head keystone, and a cornice with a blocking course. Inside the porch, there is a part-glazed door and a fanlight beneath the archivolt.

The outer bays have stone steps leading to shallow single-storey projections that contain French windows with side and overlights, all beneath cornices. On the first floor, there is a central four-pane sash window flanked by tripartite sashes, all featuring projecting sills and consoled cornices. The eaves are deep and boxed, adorned with lion's-head emblems on the guttering. The hipped roof rises to stacks with plinths and bands at the corners of a glazed apex lantern.

At the rear, the house has four bays, with a corniced doorcase in the second bay. The left return has three bays with later ground-floor casements, while the right return has bays with a door in the fourth bay.

Inside, the house retains contemporary details, particularly in the galleried central stair hall, which features a cantilevered staircase with an ornate cast-iron balustrade, including intricate splats interspersed with barleysugar balusters.
