Description
This is a garden wall with sculpted panels and figures, located opposite numbers 6 and 8 on Taylor Hill in Cawthorne. It was built in the third quarter of the 19th century and rebuilt in the 20th century. The wall is made of squared rubble, featuring stone panels and figures created by Samuel Swift of Cawthorne.
The wall has a central gateway. To the left of the gateway is a circular deep-relief panel titled "THE SICK DOG," which depicts a dog receiving attention while another dog howls. To the right is a square panel titled "THE FEED," showing horses being fed. Both panels are based on paintings by J. F. Herring, Senior. Inside the gateway, to the left, is a similar panel showing a boy beside a sarcophagus, and to the right is a knight on horseback titled "GODFREY OF BOUILLON."
Atop the wall are four figures: a sleeping lion on each side of the gateway, a lion bust on top of a castle to the far left, and a single lion supporter with a shield to the far right. The 20th-century iron gates are not of special interest.
