Description
The Golden Cross is a house located on Darton Road in Cawthorne. The west wing of the building is possibly from the 15th century, while the hall range dates to the 16th century, specifically between 1537 and 1539 based on dendrochronology. The east wing and rear outshut are likely from the 18th or early 19th century, with some alterations made in the 20th century.
The exterior is rendered with applied timber boarding to conceal the timber framing and features a stone slate roof. The building has an H-plan layout with a two-bay hall range and a two-bay west wing. It stands two storeys high, with both wings gabled and each containing one two-light window on each floor. The hall range has a central window on the ground floor, an entrance to the far right, and two two-light windows on the first floor. There are brick chimney stacks, and the rear outshut has altered openings. The rear of the west wing displays exposed posts, a tie-beam, and curving braces.
Inside, the west wing features a collar rafter roof, with indications that the ends were once half-hipped. Some framing remains in the east wall. The hall has a king-post roof with raking struts, and the tie-beams are braced to the posts. The central tie-beam has been cut out to increase headroom, likely when the hall was floored in the 17th or early 18th century.
