Description

The summer house, located approximately 40 metres south of Gunthwaite Hall, dates back to 1688 and underwent alterations in the 19th century, with restoration around 1978. It was built for the Bosvile family and features thinly-coursed rubble with a stone slate roof. The structure has a square plan, is two storeys high with a basement, and consists of one bay. The lower part has flush quoins, while the upper part has raised quoins. A chamfered plinth or band separates the floors.

The main entrance is situated at first-floor level due to the sloping ground. It has a moulded, quoined surround, moulded imposts, and an ornamental lintel above, which features a plaque displaying the Bosvile coat of arms. The building has a moulded eaves cornice and a pyramidal roof.

On the rear side, there is a double-chamfered cross window on the ground floor and a 2-light double-chamfered window on the first floor. The left side has a 2-light double-chamfered window in the basement, a small single-light double-chamfered window with a hoodmould on the ground floor, and an entrance with a chamfered surround and cambered head inscribed with 'B G B (Godfrey Bosvile III d.1714) 1688'. The first floor features a large unequally-hung 9-pane sash window, with a similar window on the right side.

Inside, the basement contains stop-chamfered spine beams and later joists, along with a 19th-century cast-iron fireplace located in the corner of the ground floor.
