Description

This is a former water mill, likely originating in the 17th century but largely rebuilt in the late 18th century. Constructed of coursed, squared rubble with a Welsh slate roof, it has an L-shaped layout. The two--storey main section, with three first-floor windows, features a prominent gabled facade on the left. This section has a large entrance with a wooden lintel and a quoined surround, as well as two-light flat-faced mullion windows to each floor, including the gable apex. A former two-light window, from which the mullions have been removed, is also visible on the first floor. The lower portion of the building to the right has two entrances, one of which is partially blocked, both with quoined surrounds, plus a similar two-light mullion window on the first floor. Additions, not of architectural significance, are present to the far right. The rear of the building displays a lower section on the left where the ground floor is below ground level, providing access to the upper floor. To the right, the main section features corn-grinding machinery, including a main pinion driving four planet-wheels each with stones; one set has been removed, but one remains operational (last used in 1956). Other original features like hoists, chutes, and sieves are also present. The mill is also distinguished by a 48-bucket, cast-iron, 20-foot diameter pitch-back water wheel, fed by a goit from a mill pond to the west, though the wooden buckets are largely missing.
