Description

Redminster House is a late 18th-century house with an early 19th-century lean-to addition located on the east side of Penistone Town Gate, Thurlstone. The house is constructed of coursed squared stone with a stone slate roof. It has a T-plan layout, with a three-story, four-bay near-symmetrical front. Rusticated quoins are present, along with a plinth. The entrance in the third bay features an architrave, pulvinated frieze, and triangular pediment. The windows on the front are 12-pane sashes with eared architraves and keystones; the first-floor windows are smaller. The second floor has square, horizontally-divided windows, where the glazing bars have been lost. Gable copings are present on cut kneelers. The house has ashlar gable stacks, including one at the rear gable. The lean-to addition to the left features a four-light window to the ground floor and a three-light window to the first floor, with flat-faced mullions. The right return has a three-light window on each floor.

Inside, the central hall contains an open dog-leg stone staircase with rounded nosings. The handrail and balusters appear to be of a later date.
