Description

The Old Vicarage, dated 1880, is a vicarage located on the north side of Howbrook Lane in Wortley, built in the Jacobean Revival style. It features deeply-coursed, dressed sandstone and a stone slate roof. The building is two storeys high and has three gabled bays, with a curtain wall enclosing a single-storey outbuilding on the left side.

The entrance front has a left bay that is set back and includes a single-storey porch at the angle. The porch has a moulded door surround with a keyed round arch and a pediment topped with a finialled parapet. Above the porch is a cross-window, with two-light windows on each floor to the left. There is a stair window beyond with three transoms, linked by a keystone to the first-floor dripmould on the right. The gable copings slope down with a catslide roof to the left and continue over the gable of the linked outbuilding. The central bay features a door to the left of a two-light window, with a double-transomed four-light window above. The right bay has three-light mullioned and transomed windows on each floor. Tall, corniced ashlar stacks are present on the roof slope to the left of the first bay. A curved wall projects to the right of the first bay, with end piers and a central pedimented doorway styled like the porch.

On the garden front, which is on the right return, each bay has a two-storey canted-bay window with 1:4:1 lights on each floor, and there are parapets with pediments and ball finials above each bay. The gables display date numerals in two plaques, and there is a central ridge stack with a cornice.
