Description
The Tap and Spile Public House is a public house built in 1897 by WG Penty for John Hunt's Brewery. It is constructed of red brick in Flemish bond with painted stone dressings and features a plain tile roof. The building has two storeys with an attic. The front facade is gabled and includes painted stone bands at lintel height on both the ground and first floors, with the upper band serving as a moulded drip course. The attic window has lintel and sill bands, and the gable coping is stepped with two volutes on each side. Below the central open pediment is a plaque inscribed 'AD 1897'. The windows are fitted with leaded lights and ovolo-moulded mullions. The ground-floor window consists of six lights with a transom, while the first floor has two windows, each with three lights and a transom. Between these windows is a tablet featuring relief figures of two cherubs with grapes and the inscription 'Black Horse Inn'. The attic includes a four-light mullioned window. The doorway, located on the left, has a round arch with an ogee hood mould and recessed doors. There is also a rainwater downpipe on the left with a hopper dated '1897', and a chimney on the right-hand return wall. The interior has not been inspected.
