Description

The Church of St Thomas is a church that originated in the 12th century and underwent extensive restoration in 1877 by J Oldrid Scott, with further alterations and additions made in 1967 by A Mennim. It is constructed from hammer-dressed limestone and features a plain tile roof. The church has a medieval four-bay nave and chancel, a south transept that includes a vestry and porch to the south, and an organ chamber added in 1967.

The west front displays a two-light plate-traceried window set beneath a round arch with a hood-mould and label stops, topped by an oculus and bellcote. To the right is a 20th-century porch. On the north side of the nave, there are three windows similar to those on the west front, with the central window being a restoration, along with two full-length 20th-century windows. The south side of the nave is obscured by a flat-roofed vestry. A three-light Perpendicular window in the south wall of the south transept has been relocated from the now-blind east front.

Inside, the church was substantially remodelled in 1967, adopting an L-shaped plan. It features a Jacobean pulpit and communion rail, and the east side of the south transept has a relocated round-arched doorway. There is a monument in the south wall dedicated to Mary Ward, which reads: "To love the poore, persever in the same, live, dy and rise with them was all the ayme of Mary Ward who having lived 60 years and 8 days dyed the 20th of Jan 1641."
