Description

The Village School, built in 1856, features a plaque commemorating G and A M Lloyd, and has undergone later additions and alterations. Constructed from red brick with sandstone ashlar dressings, it has a Welsh slate roof. The building is primarily a single storey with four bays, where the third bay projects and is gabled, containing a second storey. There are projecting gabled single-bay wings, with the left wing being a single tall storey and the right wing having a two-storey centre.

The school has a plinth and end entrances that are now glazed, framed by a four-centred surround under hoodmoulds. A plaque is located above the left entrance, and there are heraldic shields to the right. The main entrance has been moved to the rear. The windows include a four-light multi-paned mullion and transom window, a canted bay in the third bay featuring a two-light mullion window with single lights on either side in a double-chamfered surround, and a first-floor two-light mullion window with a relieving arch above. A quatrefoil is present in the gable, and there is an eaves band.

The wings feature buttresses with offsets. The left wing has a four-light mullion and transom window in a double-chamfered surround beneath a relieving arch, and a traceried light in the gable. The right wing has two and three-light mullion windows in double-chamfered surrounds and under relieving arches, with a quatrefoil in the gable. The roof is topped with groups of three octagonal ridge stacks, and a diagonal stack surmounts the left gable. A bell turret is located at the rear. The inscription on the plaque reads: 'THIS SCHOOL WAS PROJECTED BY / THE LATE LAMENTED YARBURGH / YARBURGH ESQre AND ERECTED / BY HIS SISTER AND HER HUSBAND / GEORGE AND ALICIA MARIA LLOYD / AS AN AFFECTIONATE TRIBUTE / TO HIS MEMORY, 1856'.
