Description

The Little Hall is a house dating from 1734, as indicated by the inscription in the plasterwork of the hall ceiling. It was built for John Yarburgh and features pinkish-brown brick with ashlar and red brick dressings, topped with a plain tile roof. The building is two storeys high and has five bays, with red brick quoins. The central entrance consists of an eight-fielded-panel door with a 20th-century overlight, set within a pilastered doorcase that has an open pediment on brackets. The windows are unequally-hung 15-pane sashes, each with red brick quoined jambs and flat arches made of red rubbed brick. There is a four-course band at the first floor and an eaves band, with a parapet that has ashlar coping. The gables are scalloped, and there are end stacks.

At the rear, there is a staircase window featuring an 18-pane sash with radial glazing bars at the top. Inside, the sitting room is panelled and includes an 18th-century fireplace. The dining room has panelling and alcoves with shaped shelves, as well as a Rococo fireplace. A window seat contains an earth closet. The openwell staircase features barleysugar-on-vase balusters, with three per tread, and the staircase hall ceiling has rectangular panels of moulded plasterwork. There is panelling on the landing and in some first-floor rooms, along with a dog-leg closed string service staircase that has column-on-vase balusters. Most windows have shutters.
