Description

Church. Built in 1858 by architects J B and W Atkinson for George and Alicia Maria Lloyd, with church rooms added to the north in 1973. The building is constructed of sandstone ashlar with magnesian limestone dressings and has a grey slate roof.

The church is laid out with a west tower, a 5-bay nave with a south porch, and a 2-bay chancel, all in the Gothic Revival style. The 3-stage tower is surmounted by a broach spire and features angle buttresses with off-sets and a moulded plinth. The first stage band on the west facade is interrupted by a 3-light window with reticulated tracery to its head, with trefoiled lights on the north and south sides. The second stage band contains twin-light bell-openings under hoodmoulds and lucarnes.

The nave has angle buttresses and a plinth. The south porch to the 2nd bay has a pointed entrance with a glazed oak double door set in an architrave with nook shafts and roll-moulding to the head. Two-light windows with reticulated tracery appear under hoodmoulds. A moulded eaves band with gargoyle rainwaterheads runs along the building, and ashlar coping finishes the gables.

The chancel features an angle buttress with set-offs and a plinth. Steps lead up to a 4-centred doorway under a continuous hoodmould. Two-light windows with traceried heads and an eaves band are present, with a gargoyle rainwaterhead and ashlar coping to the gable end. A notable 5-light east window displays reticulated tracery.

The interior is plain in character. Plaques on the tower exterior commemorate the 1858 rebuilding and enlargement by George and Alicia Maria Lloyd of Stockton Hall, and the 1973 redevelopment and refurbishment by the Heslington Churches Project.
