Description

York Cemetery Lodge is a lodge built in 1837, with alterations and extensions made in 1892. It was designed by JP Pritchett for The York Public Cemetery Company. The building is constructed of ashlar stone with extensions made of rendered brick, featuring shallow pitched slate roofs and stone or rendered chimney stacks.

The exterior consists of a two-storey, three-bay central range with a one-storey, three-bay extension at the front, which is angled towards the street, and a two-storey, two-bay extension at the rear. The front extension sits on a low plinth and is framed by clasping pilasters that support a moulded cornice and a low parapet. The door is glazed and panelled, while the windows are 12-pane sash types.

The central range has pedimented gable ends with clasping pilaster strips at the corners, supporting a plain entablature that runs around the entire block. The central area of both gable walls features windows on both floors, originally bordered by 12-pane sashes on the ground floor and squat 6-pane sashes with stone sills on the first floor, although these have been altered or boarded up. On the returns, there is a single two-light window with a stone sill on the first floor.

The cemetery-facing side of the rear block has a plain door with an overlight, a 12-pane sash window on the ground floor to the left, and a high two-light window to the right. The rear gable end features an open pediment with clasping pilaster strips and includes one round-headed four-pane sash window with a sill on the first floor. The interior has not been inspected.
