Description

The Knowlson Monument is a headstone located in York Cemetery, dating from around 1865. It commemorates members of the Knowlson family and is made of ashlar stone with copper inscription panels. The headstone features an ogee-headed stone slab that creates a moulded surround for two inscription panels, which are separated by a central rib that rises through the head of the slab. This rib is flanked by two addorsed crockets and is topped with a squat cross, which has moulded terminals adorned with ivy trails and a central boss that contains a defaced IHS symbol. The inscription at the top of the panels reads: "Have Mercy O Lord on the Souls of..." followed by the names of Sophia Knowlson, who died in 1863; James Mackrell, who died in 1854; Richard Knowlson, who died in 1869; James Knowlson, who died in 1919; and Mary Knowlson, who died in 1898. A Mr. Knowlson paid for the stone and engraving to the Cemetery Company in 1865.
