Description
The Terry Monument is a gravestone located in York Cemetery, dating from around 1850. It was created by Fisher of York for members of the Terry family, with the first burial being Joseph Terry, who died in 1850. The monument features a slate tablet raised on a moulded stone base. The tablet has a pedimental head flanked by acroteria, and it displays an open book carved in high relief in the tympanum. The inscription provides extensive details about three generations of the Terry family, including Joseph Terry, his wife Harriett, their children, and some grandchildren. Joseph Terry was a confectioner and the founder of the confectionery business, Terry's of York. This stone serves as an unusual and informative record of the Terry family's history in the 19th century.
