Description
The Hessay Monument is a cadaver tomb located in York Cemetery, specifically at Plot Number 17945. It commemorates Charles Ellis Hessey, who died in 1874, and is likely carved by his brother, Mark Hessey. The monument is made of Portland stone and features a slab that is approximately 2.0 meters long. It supports a carved recumbent figure draped in a shroud, through which the deceased's facial features and feet are visible. At the head of the tomb, there is a group of three watching angels on one side, which was originally balanced by a matching group on the other side, now lost. The deceased's name is carved along one side of the base, while his date of death is inscribed on the opposite side.
