Description

The monument to Arthur Knowles is a chest tomb located approximately 9 meters south of the south porch of the Church of St. John. It dates from 1707 and is made of limestone. The tomb features lyre ends and is intricately carved in high relief. The west end displays an elaborate heraldic cartouche above a recumbent lion, while the east end has a similarly detailed heart-shaped cartouche.

On the south side, there is a central circular inscription panel flanked by putti holding an open book, with angelic musicians behind them and smaller putti below. Father Time is depicted on the left and Death on the right. The north side features a similar inscription panel enclosed by fringed curtains held open by figures bearing open books, with Father Time and Death again represented. The tomb has a moulded cornice at the top and a chamfered base. The north side is inscribed to Arthur Knowles, who died in 1707, and the south side includes inscriptions for other family members. This monument is an exceptionally well-preserved and ornate example of a mason's craftsmanship.
