Description
The building is a house and a row of three tenements attached at the rear, located on Fossgate in York. It dates from the early 19th century, with a later 19th-century shopfront and windows. The main structure is made of brown brick in Flemish bond, featuring painted stone dressings and timber guttering supported by paired modillions. It has a shallow-pitched slate roof with a brick stack at the left end. The tenements are constructed of orange-red brick in English garden-wall bond, topped with a pantile roof and brick stacks.
The exterior of the house is three stories high with a two-window front. The shopfront includes fluted pilasters beneath a plain fascia and cornice, positioned between fluted consoles. There is a small-pane shop door with an overlight, set back between plate glass windows, and a flat arch leading to Straker's Passage on the right. The first and second floor windows are 4-pane sashes with painted stone sills and channelled wedge lintels featuring keyblocks. The tenements have a two-story, three-window front, with ground floor openings that are blocked or altered. On the first floor, two of the three original 16-pane sash windows remain, with openings that have flat arches made of orange brick.
Inside the house, there is a close string staircase with stick balusters, slender turned newels, and a ramped-up moulded handrail that rises from the first to the second floor.
