Description

A pair of houses built around 1850, located on George Street in York. They were later subdivided and include the property at No. 1 Chapel Row. The front facade is of pink-cream brick in a Flemish bond pattern, while the rear is of orange-cream brick in an English garden-wall bond. The eaves feature a cast-iron rainwater head detail and the roof is slate-covered with brick stacks, the right-hand end being hipped.

The two-storey, five-window front features pilastered doorcases with moulded modillion cornices. The recessed doors have four sunk panels, with the door to No. 31 having panelled reveals. The windows are 12-pane sashes with painted stone sills and flat arches formed with gauged brick; one window on No. 29 has been blocked. The rear elevation has 12-pane sashes on the first floor, with one tall round-arched staircase window altered to a four-pane sash, all with painted stone sills. A two-storey, three-window return front on the right side has blocked windows in the centre on both floors, flanked by 12-pane sashes. The interiors have not been inspected.
