Description

More House, formerly known as The Old Vicarage, is a late 18th-century vicarage that has been converted into a house. It features an early 19th-century range to the right. The building is constructed of red and pinkish-brown brick and has a Welsh slate roof. It stands three storeys high and has three bays, including full-height canted bays on the sides and a two-storey range to the right with one window on the first floor. The entrance is located in the second bay and consists of a six-panel door with an overlight, set under a flat arch made of red rubbed brick. There is also a 20th-century glazed door at the end entrance under a round arch. The canted bays have 12-pane and 6-pane sash windows, while the second bay has blind openings, all under flat arches of red rubbed brick. The building features sill bands on the ground and first floors, as well as a band on the first floor. A dentil eaves cornice adds detail to the roofline, which has separate roofs for the bays and end stacks. The right range has windows with radial glazing in their heads, including an unequally-hung 9-pane sash on the first floor under a round arch. At the rear, there is a staircase window with a 12-pane sash and radial glazing in the head.

Inside, there is an open well staircase with a wreathed handrail and stick balusters, along with a further dogleg staircase that has the same turned balusters. The ground floor room to the left features alcoves, panelling, a dentil cornice, and a fireplace, while the central room has a moulded cornice. Some first floor windows have shutters. The Reverend Sydney Smith lived in this house while Foston Rectory was being built.
