Description

Hesketh Cottages are a group of almshouses located on Heslington Lane, built in 1605 by Sir Thomas Hesketh and rebuilt in 1795 by Henry Yarburgh Esquire. The buildings feature inscriptions on plaques noting their history and a later modernization in 1968 by Richard de Yarburgh-Bateson, the 6th Baron Deramore. Constructed from pinkish-brown brick with ashlar and red brick detailing, the cottages have a plain tile roof and stand two stories high. The central section slightly projects and consists of three bays, flanked by eight-bay wings. The entrances to the 3rd, 7th, 10th, 13th, and 17th bays are six-panel doors with overlights, with the 10th bay featuring a hood supported by consoles. There are also blocked openings at the end bays. The windows are 20th-century casements, with alternate blind openings on the first floor of the wings and in the central bay, all set under flat arches made of red brick. The building has a dentil eaves cornice and a pediment above the central three bays that includes a blind oculus. Ridge stacks are present on the roof.
