Description
St Peter's Farmhouse and St Peter's Farm Cottage are located on Main Street in Knapton, North Yorkshire. The farmhouse dates from the mid-18th century and has been renovated in the 20th century, while the adjoining cottage is from the early to mid-18th century and also underwent major renovations in the 20th century. The farmhouse is built of brick in English bond with a Welsh slate roof, while the cottage features rendered brick and a pantile roof.
The farmhouse has a two-cell plan with an end-baffle-entry, while the cottage has a direct-entry two-cell plan, with the ground floor now opened up. Both buildings are two storeys high and have two first-floor windows each, with the cottage having a lower roofline. The farmhouse has a 20th-century panelled door on the left and two three-light Yorkshire sash windows with glazing bars on the right, all beneath elliptical arches. The cottage features a 20th-century six-panel door with a two-light casement window to the left and a three-light casement window to the right. A two-course band runs between the two dwellings. On the first floor, both have two-light casement windows, with those in the farmhouse also beneath elliptical arches. The farmhouse has a dentilled eaves course, and both buildings have steeply-pitched roofs with end stacks.
Inside, the farmhouse retains an original bressumer, a fireplace, and deep cupboards flanking it, though the fire surround has been replaced. The ceiling beams on both storeys are chamfered. The cottage has lost its moulded plaster cornice in the main room. The farmhouse may represent the rebuilding of the southern end of an earlier three-cell lobby-entry house, of which the northern end survives as the cottage.
