Description
This wind pump tower, dating from the mid-19th century, is located approximately 100 metres south-west of No. 7 Willow Grove in Heworth, York. It is constructed of red brick, featuring header bond on the outside and stretcher bond on the inside, set on a deep brick plinth. The cap of the tower has been removed.
The exterior is a tapering circular tower that stands about 7.0 metres high, with the upper courses reducing more sharply above an offset. Access is provided through a low board door that is topped with a shaped timber lintel. Inside, there is a shallow recess around the base of the tower that is approximately 0.75 metres high, and a board floor has been added at around 2.0 metres in height. This wind pump was used to serve the brick and tile works that operated on the site from the late 18th century until well into the 20th century.
