Description

The gate piers, walls, and railings located to the north-west of numbers 117 and 119 on The Mount in York were constructed around 1835. They are made of ashlar stone and iron. The structure features two pairs of octagonal gate piers that transition to a square shape at the base with stop-chamfered edges. Each pier has a two-stage cap, with the upper section being moulded beneath a pyramidal top, and the lower section projecting as a deeply-undercut string course with a sloping upper surface. Low stone walls with iron railings, topped with spear head finials, extend from the gateways to either side. The north-eastern gateway has been infilled with a similar wall and railings. The walls end at plain octagonal ashlar piers with rounded tops. This structure is included for its group value as an integral part of numbers 117 and 119.
