Description
No. 2 College Street is a house that was originally part of a longer range of tenements, with No. 1 now incorporated. It dates from the late 13th century or early 14th century, was remodeled around 1700, and raised in the early 19th century, with later alterations and extensions. The original building was timber-framed but was later refronted in buff-orange brick laid in Flemish bond and raised in pink-brown brick. It has a pantile roof and a brick stack.
The exterior features a three-storey, one-window front. To the left, there is a six-panel door next to paired four-pane sash windows with a painted stone sill. On the first floor, there is one four-pane sash window, and on the second floor, there is one two-by-two light casement window and one two-by-two light Yorkshire sash window. The rear of the building has 16-pane sash windows on both the first and second floors.
Inside, there is a moulded closed string staircase with bulbous balusters, square newels with attached half balusters, and a flat handrail. One three-panel door survives on the second floor, and a fragment of a passing brace roof truss is visible in a partition wall on the second floor. This house is part of the continuation of the medieval range that is incorporated into No. 5 Minster Yard.
