Description

A pair of early 19th-century houses on Chapter House Street, York, originally conversions of an earlier building. The front is painted brick, with the left side rendered, and features timber guttering on paired modillions, a pantile roof with brick coping, kneelers, and stacks. A later extension to number 6 is of orange brick in an English garden-wall style, with a pantile roof and brick stack. The front presents a two-story, six-window facade. A coved segmental carriage arch, closed by double gates with sunk panelling, is positioned centrally. Front doors have six raised and fielded panels recessed beneath radial fanlights in round-arched openings. Number 4 has 16-pane sashes on the first and second floors, and a 12-pane sash over the door. Number 6 features a 16-pane sash to the left of the door, with panelled shutters, two 12-pane sashes on the first floor, and a 12-pane sash over the arch. All windows have painted sills and cambered brick arches. The rear elevation includes a two-story gable wall belonging to the extension to the left. A plain timber lintel covers the carriage arch. Inside number 4, the ground-floor entrance hall has stone flags, and an open string staircase with stick balusters, shaped treadends, and a plain handrail rises to turned newels. A reeded cornice is present. The left front room contains a marble fireplace between round-headed alcoves, while the rear room exhibits a wide, segment-arched alcove flanked by cupboards in reeded architraves. The right front room has tiered cupboards with moulded panel doors on vestigial H-hinges. The first-floor landing also has a reeded cornice. The left front room has a marble fireplace with a round-headed grate. The attic has two plain fireplaces, one retaining its original basket grate. A raised band at eaves level on the left return displays a date, formed by tie rod ends.
