Description

Number 4 is an early 18th-century house with alterations from the early 19th century, restored in 1992. It has an attached front garden wall, railings, and gate, along with rear railings. The front of the house is built from orange-brown brick in a Flemish bond pattern, featuring a timber doorcase and eaves cornice. The rear is constructed of various brick types in a random bond, with a cogged brick cornice. The roofs are tiled, with three two-by-two-pane Yorkshire sash windows set within box dormers at the front; the rear roofs are hipped with corner scrolls, and there are brick stacks, some of which have been rebuilt.

The house has a central entrance hall plan, and is two stories and an attic in height, with a five-window front. The front entrance features an open, pedimented doorcase with fluted Ionic columns, foliar necking, rosettes on the frieze, and a festooned mask within the tympanum. The door itself is made of six raised and fielded panels, with a radial fanlight recessed within a panelled surround. Ground floor windows are twelve-pane sashes, while first-floor windows are unequal fifteen-pane sashes, all with flat arches of gauged brick and painted stone sills. A dentil and modillion eaves cornice runs along the front, returning at the right end; a fluted rainwater head is located at the left end. A brick coped shaped gable, masking a one-bay wing, is located at the far right end, behind Number 5 Minster Yard.

The rear elevation is three stories tall, with a two-story projecting bay on the left. A glazed panelled door is centrally positioned, approached by a flight of steps with stick railings and a flat handrail incorporating turned newels. A heavy door of six sunk panels is on the right, while a square bay window sits to the left. Windows on the ground and first floors are four-pane sashes, and on the second floor, they are two-light Yorkshire sashes, some retaining segmental brick arches.

Inside, the ground floor’s front room has a fluted doorcase, a six-panel door, full panelling above a dado rail, a moulded cornice, and a plastered spine beam. An alcove is framed by a round arch on fluted pilasters, with enriched imposts continuing as a band within the alcove. The entrance hall retains two bolection-moulded doorcases, and a keyed segmental arch on plain pilasters leads to the stairhall. The open-well staircase rises to the attic, with a moulded close string, heavy bulbous balusters, square newels with attached half balusters and pendants, and a moulded handrail, complemented by matching dado panelling. On the first floor, the left front room is fully panelled with a moulded dado rail and a coved and moulded cornice. The door, hung on L-hinges, has three moulded panels. The fireplace surround features a moulded cornice shelf. The right front room retains a moulded cornice and a plastered spine beam.

The front garden wall is low and topped with square section railings and turned standards with urn finials, rising to ramp up to the front door steps, with matching two-leaf front gates.
